Founded in 1976, Banda Lira Portuguesa de Brampton (BLPB) began under the name Banda Nossa Senhora de Fátima, established by a passionate group of musicians and music enthusiasts who had immigrated from São Miguel, Azores. Shortly after its formation, the band adopted its current name to reflect and celebrate the growing Portuguese community in Brampton, Ontario.
Through the dedication, commitment, and support of its members, directors, and community supporters, BLPB has earned a respected reputation within the Portuguese-Canadian community. The band proudly calls home a facility located in the northern part of Brampton, where members gather for rehearsals, performances, and social events.
Today, Banda Lira Portuguesa de Brampton consists of approximately 60 members ranging in age from 10 to 90 years old, with many members representing the next generation of Portuguese-Canadian youth. This strong blend of experience and youthful enthusiasm helps ensure the continued growth and success of the organization.
Over its distinguished history, BLPB has released multiple albums. These recordings feature original compositions by conductor Antonio da Silva Moreira and band members Steve Torres and Dinis Tavares, showcasing the band's musical talent and dedication to preserving Portuguese cultural traditions through music.
While these milestones represent important chapters in the band's story, its mission remains unchanged: to celebrate and promote Azorean heritage through music, while inspiring future generations of Luso-Canadian youth to embrace and take pride in their cultural traditions. Through every performance, rehearsal, and community event, Banda Lira Portuguesa de Brampton continues to strengthen the connection between music, culture, and community.
MAESTRO ANTÓNIO DA SILVA MOREIRA
Born in June 1936 in Ribeira Grande, São Miguel, Azores, Maestro António da Silva Moreira has dedicated a lifetime to the preservation and advancement of Portuguese band music. His musical journey began at the age of 12 when he joined Filarmónica Triunfo as a trumpet player. From those early beginnings, he developed a passion for music that would inspire generations of musicians on both sides of the Atlantic.
After immigrating to Canada in 1967, Maestro Moreira continued his commitment to the Portuguese musical tradition. In 1969, he became one of the founding members of Banda Lira Senhora de Fátima in Toronto, helping to establish a lasting musical legacy within the Portuguese-Canadian community.
In 1976, he accepted the role of founding Musical Director of Banda Lira Portuguesa de Brampton, a position he has proudly held since the band's inception. For five decades, his exceptional leadership, musical excellence, and unwavering dedication have shaped the organization into one of Canada's most respected Portuguese concert and marching bands.
Under Maestro Moreira's direction, the band has performed throughout Ontario and Quebec, toured the Azores on multiple occasions, participated in prestigious Divino Espírito Santo celebrations in New England, and recorded several albums featuring both traditional and original compositions.
His own musical works, along with those of band members he has inspired and mentored, continue to enrich the band's repertoire.
As Banda Lira Portuguesa de Brampton celebrates its 50th Anniversary, we proudly recognize Maestro António da Silva Moreira for his remarkable vision, tireless commitment, and lifelong dedication to music, culture, and community. His legacy lives on through every musician he has taught, every performance he has conducted, and every generation he has inspired.
